Troupe429: Norwalk’s LGBTQ+ Bar, Cabaret, and Community Hub

Troupe429 Gay Bar

Troupe429 is one of Connecticut’s most recognizable LGBTQ+ venues. Located at 3 Wall Street in Norwalk, the gay-owned bar and performance space blends nightlife, live entertainment, and community programming in a historic downtown building. Since opening in 2017, the venue has become a gathering place for LGBTQ+ residents across Fairfield County and the broader New York–Connecticut region.

The name itself reflects LGBTQ+ history. “Troupe” refers to a group of performers and artists coming together, while “429” references a code once used within the queer community. On an old telephone keypad, the numbers 4-2-9 spell “G-A-Y,” which historically allowed people to discreetly identify one another during periods when being openly LGBTQ+ was far less safe.

A Cabaret, Dance Club, and Cultural Space

Troupe429 is designed as more than a typical bar. The venue includes a full performance stage, lounge areas, and a dance floor illuminated by dozens of disco balls. Throughout the week, the space hosts karaoke nights, trivia, DJs, and themed dance parties that bring together a diverse crowd of LGBTQ+ guests and allies.

Troupe429 Cabaret & Drag Brunches

Live performance is a major part of the venue’s identity. Weekly drag shows and cabaret performances highlight local talent while also drawing performers from across the country. The venue has hosted appearances from well-known entertainers and cultural figures including performers connected to RuPaul’s Drag Race and other national touring acts.

Special events are also a major draw. Monthly drag brunches, burlesque performances, watch parties, and themed celebrations fill the calendar year-round. The venue also hosts SIREN, one of the largest recurring LGBTQ+ women’s parties in Connecticut.

A Safe and Inclusive Community Space

While nightlife is part of the experience, Troupe429 was founded with a broader mission. The venue was created to provide a welcoming space where LGBTQ+ people and their friends can gather, celebrate, and connect. Inside the venue, guests are greeted by portraits of LGBTQ+ icons and allies including Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, Lady Gaga, Elton John, and George Takei, reinforcing the cultural legacy that helped shape modern LGBTQ+ communities.

The space also hosts educational programs, screenings, and community conversations. These events reflect the venue’s role as a gathering place for both entertainment and dialogue within Connecticut’s LGBTQ+ community.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Small Businesses

Beyond nightlife and entertainment, Troupe429 has also created resources that support LGBTQ+ entrepreneurship across Connecticut. One of the most visible examples is the ShopGay directory, an online guide highlighting LGBTQ+ owned small businesses throughout the state.

The directory helps consumers discover and intentionally support LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs across industries including retail, hospitality, professional services, and creative businesses. By connecting residents with LGBTQ+ owned companies, the initiative strengthens the visibility and economic impact of queer-owned businesses across Connecticut.

A Cultural Anchor in Norwalk

Troupe429 has become an important part of Norwalk’s nightlife and arts scene. Located in the city’s downtown arts district near the Norwalk River, the venue attracts visitors from across Fairfield County as well as New York City. Its blend of live performance, nightlife, and community programming makes it one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ gathering spaces in the region.

At a time when LGBTQ+ bars across the United States have been steadily disappearing, venues like Troupe429 play an important role in preserving spaces where people can gather, express themselves, and celebrate queer culture openly. In Connecticut, it remains one of the most visible and active LGBTQ+ nightlife destinations.
