Why Many LGBTQ+ Homebuyers Choose Connecticut
As a Connecticut realtor who works with many out-of-state buyers, I often talk with LGBTQ+ clients who are trying to decide where to put down roots. For many people, finding the right home is only part of the decision. They also want to feel confident about the state they are moving to.
Some buyers I work with identify as LGBTQ+. Others are moving because they have a gay or transgender family member and want to live in a state where they feel comfortable building a long-term home. These conversations are a regular part of relocation planning.
Connecticut often comes up in these conversations because it has a long history of legal protections and has ranked near the top nationally in recent LGBTQ+ safety and equality reports.
Connecticut ranks near the top nationwide
A recent national report from SafeHome ranked Connecticut among the highest-scoring states in the country for LGBTQ+ safety and legal protections. The state received an "A" grade and placed near the top nationwide.
The report combines statewide nondiscrimination laws with publicly reported hate-crime data to create an overall score.
Connecticut has a long history of LGBTQ+ progress
Connecticut has been ahead of many states on LGBTQ+ rights for decades. The state was one of the earliest in the country to adopt laws protecting people from discrimination based on sexual orientation, and later expanded those protections to include gender identity and expression.
In 2008, Connecticut became the second state in the country to recognize same-sex marriage through a state Supreme Court decision. Marriage equality became legal here years before it was recognized nationwide.
Connecticut law also includes nondiscrimination protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations. These statewide rules help create a consistent framework for people moving here from other parts of the country.
What LGBTQ+ buyers often like about Connecticut
Many of the buyers I work with are relocating from states like Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and New York. They are often looking for a place where buying a home feels straightforward and where statewide protections are clearly defined.
Connecticut's legal framework is one reason the state stands out to relocation buyers. Knowing that protections apply across the state can make the homebuying process feel more predictable for people who are moving from out of state.
Buyers also often appreciate how Connecticut combines small-town New England living with access to major cities. Many communities are within a couple of hours of both New York City and Boston, which makes it easier to stay connected to larger metro areas.
A common path for relocation buyers
Most buyers start their search online, comparing states and reading about relocation experiences. Connecticut often stands out because it offers a mix of historic homes, walkable town centers, and easy access to parks, shoreline areas, and city amenities.
Many towns also have housing stock built between the 1920s and 1940s along with newer construction, giving buyers a range of styles and price points to consider.
By the time buyers visit in person, they usually have a clearer sense of which towns match their lifestyle and budget. From there, the process becomes about finding the right home rather than deciding whether Connecticut is the right state.
