APNH (AIDS Project New Haven): HIV Services, Housing Support, and LGBTQ Health Resources in Connecticut

by Nick Gilham

APNH, originally founded as AIDS Project New Haven, is one of Connecticut’s most important nonprofit organizations focused on health access, housing stability, and support services for people affected by HIV and other health disparities. Based in New Haven, the organization has served the region for more than four decades and today works with thousands of clients across the state each year.

The organization began in 1983 during the earliest years of the AIDS crisis. At that time, people living with HIV often faced stigma, limited medical knowledge, and very few formal support systems. Community volunteers and advocates came together to create a local organization that could provide direct help, guidance, and compassion to those affected. What started as a grassroots effort quickly became one of the state’s most important health and social service nonprofits.

APNH’s work focuses on the idea that health outcomes are closely tied to housing, nutrition, and social stability. Medical care alone is often not enough. The organization addresses the broader factors that influence whether someone can maintain treatment, stay healthy, and live safely in their community.

HIV Prevention and Care

HIV prevention and treatment remain a core part of APNH’s mission. The organization provides testing services, education programs, and support for people who are newly diagnosed or currently living with HIV. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment dramatically improve long-term health outcomes and reduce transmission, which makes outreach and testing a major focus of their work.

APNH also connects clients to medical providers and helps coordinate care through case management programs. These services help people navigate insurance systems, maintain treatment schedules, and access medications that allow many individuals with HIV to live long and healthy lives.

Housing and Stability Programs

Housing stability plays a critical role in healthcare outcomes, particularly for individuals managing chronic conditions. APNH operates programs that help clients find and maintain safe housing, including rental assistance, housing placement support, and case management services for individuals facing housing insecurity.

Stable housing allows people to remain connected to medical care and community support systems. Programs like these recognize that healthcare challenges are often deeply connected to economic and social conditions.

Food and Nutrition Support

Nutrition is another key factor in maintaining health for people living with chronic illness. APNH provides food assistance programs that help clients access groceries and other essential nutrition resources. These programs ensure individuals receiving medical treatment have consistent access to healthy food.

Food insecurity can make it difficult for someone to follow treatment plans or maintain regular medication schedules. By addressing this need directly, APNH helps clients maintain better overall health.

Mental Health and Community Support

Beyond medical and economic support, APNH also recognizes the importance of mental health and social connection. Counseling services, support groups, and peer networks help individuals navigate the emotional challenges that often accompany serious health conditions or social isolation.

These services create opportunities for connection and support that strengthen the broader community. Many people find that these programs provide not just assistance, but a sense of belonging and stability during difficult periods of their lives.

Role in Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community

APNH has long been connected to Connecticut’s LGBTQ community. During the early years of the HIV epidemic, gay and bisexual men were among the groups most heavily affected by the disease. Organizations like APNH played a crucial role in providing support when few other resources existed.

Today the organization continues to serve many LGBTQ residents through prevention programs, outreach initiatives, and partnerships with other LGBTQ-affirming organizations across the state. Groups such as Anchor Health and the Triangle Community Center are part of the broader network of organizations that help ensure inclusive healthcare and support services throughout Connecticut.

A Long-Standing Community Resource

More than forty years after its founding, APNH continues to evolve in response to changing healthcare needs and social challenges. The organization now addresses a wide range of issues including housing insecurity, access to medical care, food stability, and behavioral health services.

For many Connecticut residents, especially those navigating complex health or economic challenges, APNH remains a critical support system. Its programs reflect a broader understanding that strong communities are built not only through medical care, but also through stability, dignity, and access to essential resources.
