Two West Hartford Area Bookstores Are Moving — And Both Are Having Big Sales
If you love bookstores, this is a moment worth paying attention to. Two well-known bookstores in the West Hartford area are relocating, and both are running moving sales right now. The good news is that neither store is leaving the area. Both are staying close to their current neighborhoods and will continue serving local readers.
Moves like this don’t happen very often, especially at the same time. For many people in West Hartford and Farmington, these bookstores have been regular stops for years.
The Barnes & Noble located just down the street from Westfarms Mall has been serving local readers for 32 years. For many people in the area, this is the bookstore they grew up visiting. School reading lists, holiday gifts, and weekend browsing trips have all happened here.
The store’s last day at its current location will be Saturday, May 2, 2026. The new Barnes & Noble will be located inside Westfarms Mall next to Macy’s, in the building formerly occupied by Forever 21. The new store is planned to open in July, less than a mile away.
As the move approaches, clearance and inventory reduction usually means deals across more sections of the store. If you’ve been meaning to stock up, this is your window.
River Bend Bookshop is also moving, but it’s staying right in the neighborhood. The West Hartford shop is relocating to 224 Park Road.
Before they pack up, River Bend is running a 25% off storewide moving sale from Saturday, February 28 through Saturday, March 7 at the West Hartford shop. The sale excludes River Bend gift cards and the Oh My Mahjong line, but most of the store is discounted.
If you like the independent bookstore experience, this is an easy way to support a local shop and leave with a stack of new reads.
Bookstores are more than just retail space. They’re places where people browse without a deadline, discover new authors, and bring their kids for their first books. Independent shops like River Bend and larger stores like Barnes & Noble both play a role in that.
For people moving to West Hartford from out of state, it can be a surprise to see how strong local bookstores still are here. In a lot of suburbs, bookstores disappeared years ago. In this area, they’re still part of everyday life.
Both stores are worth visiting before the moves happen. The sales make it a good time to stock up, but it’s also a chance to see these spaces one more time before they change.
Barnes & Noble will reopen inside Westfarms Mall. River Bend Bookshop will keep serving readers just down Park Road. It’s not the end. It’s just the next chapter.
